Parental Committee Overview

A. Company Board/Owner’s Role:    

The Company Board, headed by the owner as Chairperson, will oversee the long-term strategic direction and financial Organisational and Administrative well-being of the school. The owner(s) has full discretion and autonomy as an independent sovereign organism. This board will have the following functions and responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Planning:

The Company Board will be responsible for setting the school’s vision, mission, and long-term goals. It will develop comprehensive strategies for academic growth, financial sustainability, and infrastructure development.

  1. Financial Oversight:

The Company Board will handle budgetary decisions, financial planning, and fundraising initiatives to ensure the school’s financial stability and growth.

  1. Succession Planning:

The Company Board will be responsible for identifying, training and coaching potential successors for key leadership roles within the school, including the Principal and other critical administrative positions.

  1. Legal and Regulatory Compliance:

Ensuring the school adheres to all relevant laws, regulations, and licensing requirements will be the responsibility of the Company Board.

B. School Board & Private Boarding Committee:

The School Board, recognized and appointed by the Company Board/Owner(s), will have a more focused role in the day-to-day affairs of the school in consultation with the company board. It will include the following key stakeholders:

  1. Principal:

The Principal will serve as the ex-officio member of the School Board, providing insights into academic policies, learners development, and administrative matters.

  1. Head of Departments (H.O.D):

H.O.D representatives will facilitate communication between the academic faculty and the board, conveying department-specific feedback and concerns.

  1. Teacher Representatives:

Elected by the school’s teaching staff, teacher representatives will advocate for their colleagues’ interests and collaborate on enhancing the teaching-learning experience.

  1. Parent Representatives:

Parents play a vital role in the school community. Parent representatives (self nominated or by peers) will act as a bridge between the School Board and the Parent Community, sharing feedback and addressing concerns.

  1. Learner Representatives:

Learners’ voices are essential for a learner-centered approach to education. Learner (nominated by peers) representatives will articulate the students’ needs, ideas, and suggestions to the School Board.

  1. Private Boarding Committee:
  1. The parents/guardians of Boarding House will establish a Boarding Committee for its efficient running (members are self nominated or by peers).
  2. A boarding committee consists of not less than five and not more than seven members, including the superintendent who is a member by virtue of his or her office and a learner.

Functions of Gems Private Boarding House Committee;

The functions of the Boarding Committee in relation to the Boarding House concerned are –

  1. to be liaison between owner(s), Boarding House Clients and Boarding House.
  2. To help come up with constructive and positive reinforcement/ideas on enhancing smooth, safe and conducive operations of the facility.
  3.  exercise overall supervision over the Boarding House;
  4. after prior consultation with and prior consent of owner(s), advise – the superintendent in matters pertaining to the Boarding House;
  5. to receive regular reports on the affairs of the Boarding;
  6. to inform itself on the conditions of the Boarding facilities and advise the owner(s);
  7. to receive representations and grievances of boarders and from parents of boarders and after prior consent of owner(s) advise the superintendent with regard to such representations and grievances;
  8. In collaboration with superintendent investigate and advise on such matters as the Owner(s) may refer to it for investigation and report;
  9. to recommend Boarding rules and a code of conduct for boarders to the owner(s);
  10. to promote the general health, nutrition, hygiene, security & welfare of boarders;

Important to note:

  1. These memberships are not remunerated,
  2. members will meet once a month (face-to-face or virtually).

A member of a School board & boarding committee holds office –

  1. The term of  office of a member of the member other than a learner may not exceed two years (excluding the Superintendent)
  2. The term of  office of a member who is a learner may not exceed one year. 
  3. The term is not fixed for the whole (1 or 2 years) it remains up for review every 6 months.
  4.  A member or office-bearer may be re-elected or co-opted, as the case may be, after the expiry of his or  her term of office.
  5. The term of office of a member may be reviewed or cancelled by owners should this be necessary to preserve the integrity of the entity.

All told, it is the duty of all these entities to generate and promote positive advocacy for both the school & boarding.
